Dorothy Mae Gentry

Dorothy Mae Gentry, 88, of Stanardsville passed away peacefully while surrounded by her children on March 7, 2014.

Dorothy was born on October 28, 1925 in Greene County, daughter of the late Reuben and Rhoda Breeden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tobias J. Gentry; stepfather, Robert Breeden; brothers, Herbert, Thomas and Clifton Breeden; son-in-law, Harold Wayne Shifflett.

She is survived by her children, Harold Gentry and his wife, Beverly, Mary Shifflett, Emmogene Collier and her husband, David, John Gentry, Phillip Gentry and his friend, Donna Taylor, Melinda Smith and her husband, Jeff all of Greene County, Charlotte Collier and her husband, Hollas, Barbara Shifflett and her husband, Donnie of Albemarle County. Dorothy is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and four honorary grandchildren.

Dorothy was affectionately known as “Grandma Dot” to all the children in the neighborhood. She was an avid gardener, loved to play bingo and go to yard sales. She was employed by Blue Ridge School until retiring at the age of 75.

A funeral service will be held at 1pm Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the Nortonsville Church of God with the Rev. David Allison and Rev. Eddie Dean officiating. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Earlysville. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Monday, March 10, 2014 at Nortonsville Church of God.

Edna Mary Madeline Ashley Norris

Edna Mary Madeline Ashley Norris, 89, of Culpeper went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 1, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.   She was born January 3, 1925, in Plymouth, England.

Edna met and married Robert “Sug” Norris on January 24, 1944, during World War II in Plymouth, England.  She came to this country as his “war bride” and everyone who met her, loved her. She will be missed by her family and all who have known her.  She worked many years for the Culpeper Book Store and later she and Sug owned the Culpeper Bowling Lanes.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. Norris Sr.,father, Leonard William Ashley, her mother, Violet May Harris and her brother, Ronald Harris all of  Plymouth, England.

She is survived by her daughter, Madeline Norris Price and her husband, Johnny of Brightwood, VA, and her son Robert C. Norris, Jr. and his wife, Judy of Mitchells. Six grandchildren, JT Price II and his wife, Tracy, Jennifer Price Brockman and her husband John Robert,  Victoria Norris Bassols and her husband, Joaquin, Robin Norris Velazquez, Ashleigh Norris Coffey and her husband, Matt and Joseph Norris and his fiancé, Sara.

Additional survivors include twelve great-grandchildren, Johnny T. Price III, Jake Price, Nathan Brockman, Tucker Brockman, Elizabeth Brockman, Andrew Wince, Jordan Wince, Candace Wince, Dustin Smith, Liam Smith, Julius Velazquez, and Meadow Coffey and two great-great grandchildren, Carlisle Wince and Dalis Wince.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, from 1-3 pm at the Reva Fire Hall, 18230 Birmingham Rd., Culpeper, VA.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at 1 pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 6262 Hoover Rd Reva, VA 22735, with Rev. Sandy Martin officiating.

Interment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her son, Robert C. Norris, Jr., her son-in-law, Johnny T. Price, her grandsons, JT Price and Joseph Norris, and her great grandsons, Johnny T. Price III, Jordan Wince and Jake Price.  Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jennifer Price Brockman, Ashleigh Norris Coffey, Nathan Brockman, Tucker Brockman, Elizabeth Brockman, Victoria Norris Bassols, Robin Norris Velazquez, Andrew Wince, Candace Wince, Carlisle Wince and Meadow Coffey.

Dawn Marie Shifflett-Morris “Peek-a-Boo”

Dawn Marie Shifflett-Morris “Peek-a-Boo”, four-month old infant daughter of Gordon Shifflett and Crystal Morris went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. She was born on October 29, 2013 in Charlottesville.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her siblings, Kizzie Morris, Gary Shifflett, Bobbi Shifflett, Jesse Shifflett, Shantel Shifflett and Kelly Charleton, maternal grandparents, Nathan and Sheila Morris, paternal grandparents, Manis and Geraldine Shifflett, special aunt, Marie Branch and numerous aunts, uncles, family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 6 pm to 8pm at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail Ruckersville.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 11 am at Bacon Hollow Baptist Church with Pastor Van Crawford officiating.

David Lamb

David Lamb, 73, of Stanardsville went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 22, 2014.

David was born November 23, 1940, son of the late Niceadaus Lamb and Elsie Frances Morris McMullen. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Hester Roach Lamb; four children, Brenda Slaughter and her husband, Mike of Stanardsville, Lewis David Lamb and Kelly Zeier also of Stanardsville, Lisa Dean and her husband, Mike of Ruckersville, and Barbara Collier and Robert Taylor of Stanardsville; six grandchildren, Michael Slaughter, Joshua Collier, Matthew Lamb, Monica Dean, Brandon Collier and James Dean; two sisters, Buford Horner and her husband, Finley of Arlington and Shirley “Jodi” Durrer of Ruckersville; numerous nieces, nephews, very special sisters and brothers-in-law that he deeply loved, and many other family members and friends.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by a sister, Allie Jerrell and five brothers, Otis Lamb, Montie Lamb, Haywood Lamb, Ennis Breeden and Niceadaus Lamb, Jr.

Jinks Arlington McDaniel

Jinks Arlington McDaniel, 91, of Barboursville went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 13, 2014. He was born on June 4, 1922 in Greene County to the late Walter and Anna Cox McDaniel.

Mr. McDaniel was a member of Ruckersville Baptist Church for over 60 years and had a special talent for being a self-taught rock mason and builder. He enjoyed gardening, doing farm work and singing. He had a very inventive mind and was a creator of many things. His love of people, family and especially God was an inspiration to many and will be truly missed. He was a servant for the Lord and loved to proclaim Jesus Christ through his beautiful light displays.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Olgene McDaniel, his children, Wendell A. McDaniel and his wife, Deborah, and Deborah S. Mundie and her husband, Curtis.

Additional survivors include his grandchildren, Brian C. Mundie and his wife, Allison, Danielle Mundie and Amanda McDaniel, and great grandchild, Riley Mundie. Special care was given by his nieces Mildred Johnson, Patricia Shifflett and Joyce McDaniel, his granddaughter, Amanda McDaniel and his sister-in-law, Oneida Herring.

In addition to his parents those that went to Heaven before him were his great grandson, Jacob C. Mundie, his brother, Columbus McDaniel, and sisters, Olga Baugher, Bonnie Harlow, Fern Grimes, and Elizabeth Wood.

A special thanks to every heart that prayed, all visits and songs sung in praise lifting his spirits and all of his doctors and nurses, especially Dr. Bostic, for their special care and home visits. Also to Mildred Johnson, who was a special angel, that stayed by his side day and night.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 16, 2014 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Ruckersville Baptist Church, 6 Moore Rd Ruckersville.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 17, 2014 at 1 pm at Ruckersville Baptist Church with Rev. Kyle Clements and Dr. Charles O’Rourke officiating.

Gerald Malcolm Childress

Gerald Malcolm Childress, 74, of Shackelford passed away on Friday, February 7, 2014 at Grace Health and Rehabilitation. He was born on November 16, 1939 in Charlottesville to the late Levy and Rosa Wood Childress.

He is survived by his children, Robin Marston and her fiancé, Jonathan Williams of Stanardsville and Tracy Childress and his wife, Ellen of Ruckersville.

Additional survivors include his brothers, Donald and Ted Childress and his grandchildren, Logan Marston, Cole Marston, Cameron Childress and Krista Childress.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Childress.

Crystal Zuzga

Crystal Zuzga, 90, of Stanardsville died on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Grace Health and Rehabilitation. She was born on June 23, 1923 in Greene County to the late Luke and Lillie Morris Shifflett.

She is survived by her stepson, Louis S. Marin, Jr., and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Zuzga.

Judith Rose Wysong

Judith Rose Wysong, 51, of Stanardsville passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at her residence. She was born on May 31, 1962, in Washington, D.C. to Marianne Wysong of Bethlehem, PA, and the late George K. Wysong.

Judy’s role in life was taking care of others, be they people or animals. She grew up in Miami, FL, where she spent many hours as a candy striper, an experience that led her to pursue a career in the medical field. Judy attended Barry University in Miami Shores and MacMurray College in Jacksonville, IL, where she received her nursing degree. In 1988, she moved to Charlottesville to work as an Oncology Specialist Nurse at the University of Virginia hospital. A dedicated and caring nurse, Judy was also the most unselfish person in the world and an avid animal lover who would take in sick or injured animals and find homes for them after rehabilitation. She had a beautiful passion for writing poetry and enjoyed canoeing on the James River, traveling to Pennsylvania for music festivals, and meeting her friends at Durty Nelly’s Pub. Judy, our angel here on earth, we will miss you.

In addition to her mother, Judy is survived by her sisters, Patricia Wysong and Elizabeth Wysong, her brother George K Wysong III, and a host of numerous family and friends.

Doris Marie Conley

Doris Marie Conley, 63, of Ruckersville passed on Sunday, January 26, 2014 at her home. She was born on July 14, 1950 in Greene County to the late Floyd and Mildred Shifflett.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her brothers, George Shifflett, Joe Shifflett, Allen Shifflett, and Ottis Shifflett, sisters, Fannie Shifflett, Mary Shifflett and Margaret McCardell, brother-in-law, John “Hoyt” Collier, step children, Cletus Conley and Lisa Shifflett, grandchild, Manis “Lee” Shifflett III, and her pastor, Elbert Conley.

She is survived by her loving husband and caregiver Lester Conley, her children, Clinton Deane and his wife Janet, Wade Deane and his wife Stacy, Marian Bowman and her husband Tressler, Rebecca Shifflett and her husband Wesley, and Melvin Conley and his wife Sharon.

Additional survivors include her sisters Sylvia Morris and her husband Ray, Goldie Deane and her husband Lloyd, and Hazel Collier; her grandchildren, Amanda Deane, Kimberly Deane, Brooke Deane, Leighann Shifflett, Betty Easton, Brandon Shifflett, Kendall Shifflett, Chad Conley, Christopher Conley, and Mitchell Conley, 4 great grandchildren, her ex-husband Sherman Deane, her sister-in-law Redie Bortle, and her daughter-in-law Darlene Conley.

Doris was a beloved mother, sister and wife who loved to spend time with her family and was a member of Shady Grove Bible Baptist Church.

The family would like to thank Bridgett and LaQuanda for their dedication and love shown throughout her illness.

Charles “Chick” McCollum Wilber, III

Charles “Chick” McCollum Wilber, III, 65, of Barboursville  died on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at his residence. He was born on June 18, 1948 in Illinois to Gloria Harrington Wilber and the late Charles Wilber, II.

He is survived by his daughters, Lyndsey Erin Wilber and Melissa Christine Oakley and her husband, Thomas, one sister, Ramona Wilber, his granddaughter, Isabel Piper Oakley, the mother of his children, Georgia Wilber and many special friends he met along the way.

Otto Jennings Parrott, Jr.

On January 19, 2014, Otto Jennings Parrott, Jr. was called home to be with his Lord, Jesus Christ.

He lived most of this life in Greene County. Born September 23, 1918 to the late Otto J. and Sudie B. Parrott, he spent his early years on the family farm in Quinque. After serving in the Army during World War II, he married the love of his life, Marjorie Estes. Their wedding was the first held at Ruckersville Baptist Church.

Mr. Parrott always believed that one should enjoy one’s work. For many years he was self-employed as a furniture upholsterer, often using his skills to restore antique furniture. He also served as a magistrate in Greene County and he was a dispatcher with the Greene County Sheriff’s Department until he neared his 80th birthday. Mr. Parrott also found joy in tending his large vegetable garden and taking care of his yard.

Mr. Parrott leaves behind many people whose lives he touched. He is survived by only one brother, Sherwood Parrott of Gordonsville. He leaves his three children, O.J. Parrott, III and his wife, Edna of Elkton, Rebecca P. Vacilando and Kathleen S. “Kitty” Pratt and her husband, Ernie all of Ruckersville. One of the greatest joys of his life was his three grandchildren, Lucas Brian “Luke” Pratt, Marjorie Rebecca “Marre” Pratt and Virginia Kathleen “Ginna” Pratt. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Parrott was preceded in death by his siblings Buford, Brightberry, Ed and Hulette Parrott.

A celebration of this life was held at 11 am Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Ruckersville Baptist Church where he served his Lord for many years. The Reverend Kyle Clements presided, and interment followed at the Ruckersville Community Cemetery. The family received friends from 6:30-8 pm Friday evening at the church.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Duani, the Neurosurgery staff at UVA, the Intervention Radiology staff at MJH and the manifold home health care providers who worked together to improve the quality of the last years of his life.

William “Bill” Warren Powell

William Warren Powell, 87, of Stanardsville died on Monday, January 13, 2014 at the Hospice House of Charlottesville. He was born on September 13, 1926 in Greene County to the late Raymond Clyde and Mary Moyers Powell.

Bill served our country in the United States Army during World War II. He belonged to the VFW and Moose Lodge of Greene. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and, most of all, his garden where he grew the most beautiful vegetables. He was a loving husband for 61 years and a very wonderful father who will be truly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Elnora Powell, his daughter, Sherri Powell and special niece, Donna Powell all of Stanardsville, two sisters, Christine Eppard of Stanardsville and Nora Dillon and her husband, Edwin of Arlington, three brothers, Linwood Powell and his wife, Helen of Elkton, Meredith Powell of Ruckersville and James Powell and his wife, Joyce of Stanardsville, one sister-in-law, Ruby Powell of Stanardsville and numerous other nieces and nephews, family and friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Raymond Junior Powell and Thaddeus W. Powell.

Perry Bolling McSherry

Perry Bolling McSherry, 53 of Ruckersville died on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at his residence. He was born on April 19, 1960 in Charlottesville to Bobby and Virginia Newcomb McSherry of York, PA.

When Perry was nine years old, he and his family moved to York, where he spent his childhood and upon graduating high school he went to college at William and Mary and was graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Once he completed college he moved to New Orleans and studied at Tulane University where he received his master’s degree. He returned to Yorktown / Jamestown and worked as an archeologist for the James River Institute for Archeology. His fate later took him to Thailand where he taught kindergarten and then English literature and poetry at Chiang Mai University. He met the love of his life during his seven-year  stay whom he married and had a son. He returned to the states and became an English teacher at Madison County High School where he was loved and adored by so many.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his wife, Chanowan Kulsiri McSherry, his son, Isaac Gawin McSherry, his sister, Tracey Boylan Currier and her husband, Kyle and his nieces and nephews, Delaney Boylan, Finley Boylan, Taylor Currier and Bryce Currier.

A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, January 17, 2014 at 4:30 pm at Madison County High School auditorium with Father Stephen Lahey officiating.

James Eddie Herndon

James Eddie Herndon, 83, of Stanardsville died on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at his residence. He was born on August 30, 1930 in Greene County to the late James and Carrie Carpenter Herndon.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Herndon, his children, Rafis Herndon and Aretha Herndon, step children, Jermaine, Daniel and Christopher Herndon, his brother, Albert Herndon and his wife, Bernice and 14 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepson, William Herndon and his sister, Addie Roy and her husband, James Roy.

Iler Margaret Morris

Iler Margaret Morris, 81, of Earlysville passed away Friday, January 3, 2014 surrounded by her loving family at the Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Iler was born November 21, 1932 in Greene County. She was the daughter of the late Hezzie Morris and Virgie Mary Shifflett Morris.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Elmer Morris, Cecil Morris, Winston Morris, Elbert Morris and Edith Morris.

Iler is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, John W. Morris; three sons, Jay Morris, David Morris and his wife, Theresa, Hezzie Morris and his wife, Donna; one daughter, Karen Lynne Davis and her husband, Mike; six sisters, Thelma Shaut, Linnie Shifflett and her husband, Charlie, Lula Garrison, Lucille Shifflett and her husband, Harmon, Corina Kincer and Muriel Simpson; nine grandchildren, Scotty, Victoria, Dana, Krystal, Joey, Ashley, Cody, Phillip and Crissy; 10 great grandchildren, Maddie, Luke, Brooklyn, Braelyn, Nathan, Anakin, Alanna, Drew, Alex and Sophia; and many other family members and friends.

Iler was employed at Blue Ridge School for 33 years. She loved sewing, spending time with family and had a smile that could light up the room. She was always thinking of others first and was a loving and caring person, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

The family would like to thank the staff of Martha Jefferson Hospital, Dr. John Davison and her CNA Angie Quarles for their love and compassion.

Kenneth “Kenny” Lloyde Deane

Kenneth Lloyde Deane, 21, of Ruckersville died on Thursday, January 2, 2014. He was born in Charlottesville on March 13, 1992 to Lloyde “Willie” and Karen Deane of Ruckersville.

Kenny loved to play basketball and workout. He was a wonderful artist and a loving son who loved life to the fullest. His smile and loving nature will be truly missed.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his grandparents , Agnes Lucas and Lloyd and Goldie Deane, his aunt, Kathy Davis, uncles, Barry Davis and Bob Dinn and cousins, Kaitlin Carlisle and Ashley Dinn.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Lucas and his aunt Kim Dinn.

The family received friends on Monday, January 6, 2014 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail Ruckersville.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 11 am at Ryan Funeral Home with Pastor Jojuan White officiating.

Interment followed in Holly Memorial Gardens.

Daryoush Motameni

Daryoush Motameni of Charlottesville died on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Trinity Mission Health and Rehab.

He was born on January 31, 1947 in Meshad, Iran, to Abolhassan Motameni and Afaugh Motameni. Daryoush was in a car accident on August 4, 1994 in Scottsville that left him with frontal lobe brain damage requiring nursing home care.

Prior to the accident Daryoush was a loving husband and father. He was an avid antiquer and had an antique shop on Valley St. in Scottsville, and was sought after for his knowledge from antiques to junktiques and was always ready to make a deal.

Daryoush had a great sense of humor and an eye for a bargain. He is survived by his mother, Afaugh Motameni, wife Carolyn Kuper Motameni, two sons Daryoush “Shane” Motameni and Mehron “Derrick” Motameni, Three step-children, Lauren Chambers and her husband Jason, William “Bill” Rines and his wife Roxy, Bonnie Rines and Jim Ernst, one brother Korosh Motameni, three sisters, Semifaugh Motameni Malaekeh and her husband Jamshid, Touran Motameni and Shahin Motameni, and many other friends and relatives that will all miss him dearly.

Randolph Franklin “Punch” Shifflett, Sr.

Randolph Franklin Shifflett, Sr. “Punch”, 78, of Stanardsville died on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at his residence. He was born on February 28, 1935 in Stanardsville to the late Earl Clarence and Grace Shifflett.

Randolph was a member of Stanardsville United Methodist Church and the Sons of the American Revolution. He served our country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid golfer at Greene Hills Club who was very proud of his “five holes in one”. Above all he was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather and will be missed dearly.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Erva Burkett Shifflett and three children, Debra Shifflett Snow and her husband, Michael of Ruckersville, Randolph Franklin Shifflett, Jr. and his wife, Lisa of Wilmington, NC and Sabrina Shifflett Rivera and her husband, Pedro of Wilmington, NC and a special niece, who was with the family during his final hours, Janet Salotti of Leesburg.

Additional survivors include his grandchildren, Zack Horne (Heather), Stephen Horne, Randy Shifflett, Samuel Shifflett, Joshua Breeden, Jacqueline Breeden, Jordan Strombeck (Justin), Jeremy Breeden (Kara), Hannah Breeden, Abelardo Rivera and Alexander Rivera, two great grandchildren, Annabelle Horne and Mattox Breeden, two siblings, Earl C. Shifflett, Jr. and Evelyn Shifflett Barnes, his sister-in-law, Valeria Shifflett and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Wayne Shifflett.

A memorial service celebrating his life was held on Monday, December 16, 2013 at 2 pm at Stanardsville United Methodist Church, 25 Court St. Stanardsville with Rev. Chuck Winner officiating.

Minnie Shifflett Riley Goodson

On December 11, 2013, Minnie Shifflett Riley Goodson of Thelma, Louisa passed at her daughter’s home.

She was born May 31, 1920, in Albemarle County, to the late Cornelius Arthur and Nellie Rebecca Shifflett. Minnie is survived by her daughter, Valeria Riley Shifflett; one granddaughter, Kelly Riley Taylor and her husband David and their three children, Jake Owen Taylor, Riley James Taylor and Kate Rebecca Taylor. She is also survived by two step granddaughters and one step grandson; Regina Shifflett Brumback and her husband, Ken, and their son Ian, Sherri Selena Shifflett, and Richard Todd Shifflett; a special brother-in-law, Marion (Buck) Harris and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by the husband of her children, Otto Franklin Riley and her second husband, Otis Wade Goodson, her son, Calvin Franklin Riley, and son-in-law, Kenneth Wayne Shifflett.

Minnie was the last member of her family of nine siblings; a member of Rivanna Baptist Church and retired from Frank Ix and Sons in Charlottesville after more than 50 years of service. The family would like to express a special thanks to the dedicated staff of Forest Lakes Family Medicine, especially Dr. Cynthia Richards and Hospice of the Piedmont. A graveside service was held on Friday, December 12, 2013, at 2 pm at Monticello Memory Gardens, with Pastor Larry Wingfield officiating.

Ruth Dixon Gosnell Kuper

Ruth Dixon Gosnell Kuper, 87, of Charlottesville died on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Rosewood Village. She was born on April 4, 1926 in Danville to the late James Frank and Maude Esther Dixon Gosnell.

She met the love of her life, Bernard “Bud” Kuper in Danville on September 19, 1945 and married him 32 hours later on September 20, 1945. They were married 66 years! Ruth loved to cook and sew and was also a school bus driver and retired from the Virginia school systems after 15 years. She was an amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be deeply missed and always loved.

She is survived by her children, Carolyn Motameni and her husband, Daryoush of Stanardsville, Kathy Poland and her husband, Paul of Stanardsville, Steve Kuper and his wife, Susan of Laurel, Maryland, Cynthia Varrieur and her husband, Paul of Marietta, Georgia, Alisa Lam and her husband, Dale of Stanardsville, Maurice Kuper and his wife, Penny of Stanardsville, Brian Kuper and his partner, Tracy of Phillipsburg, New Jersey, Eric Kuper of Earlysville and Scott Kuper and his partner, Jenny Varner of Stanardsville, 22 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, and two brothers, Frank and Harold.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Kuper, one sister, Virginia, one brother, Floyd and one grandson, Timothy Kuper.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Piedmont for their kind care and compassion.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 3 pm at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church with Father Dan Bain officiating. The family received friends one hour prior to the service.

Ruby Marie Roach, 87, of Stanardsville passed away Sunday, December 8, 2013 at her home surrounded by her family.

Ruby was born November 24, 1926 in Greene County. She was the daughter of the late Jesse James Shifflett and Katie Knight Shifflett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert S. Roach; three sisters, Bernice Deane, Gladys Taylor and Dorothy Lam; two brothers, Otis Shifflett and Junior Shifflett. Ruby is survived by her two sons, Gary and his wife, Wanda of Ruckersville, Fred and his fiancée, Wanda also of Ruckersville; three grandchildren, Lisa Roach and her friend, Paul Meadows of Ruckersville, Larry Roach, Gary Roach both of Ruckersville; two grandchildren, Brianna and Taylor; two sisters, Marie Drumheller of Charlottesville, Doris Shifflett and her husband, Ernest of Maryland; one brother, Vernon Shifflett of Charlottesville; many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and neighbors.

Ruby retired after 23 years of work at IX Silk Mill and 20 years at Siemans. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Duani, Debbie Bell and Staff for all of their help in our time of need.

James H. Smith, 84, of Springfield passed away Saturday, December 7, 2013. He was born July 6, 1929 in Michigan, son of the late Harold Smith and Eva Barton Smith. James was the last surviving of their children. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Lucille Wildman Smith; and one daughter, Diane Lynn Smith.

James is survived by five sons, James Smith of Dillwyn, Virginia, Dale Smith of Columbus, Ohio, Donald Smith of Rayland, Ohio, Ray Smith of Bellaire, Ohio, Tim Smith of Nappanee, Indiana; five daughters, Janet Janos of Bridgeport, Ohio, Patricia Crawford of Louisa, Virginia, Connie Ice of Springfield, Virginia, Debra Heatherington also of Louisa, Virginia, Gloria Zanes of Rayland, Ohio; 29 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren.

Eleanor Marshall Pace

Eleanor Marshall Pace, 77, of Ruckersville passed away Friday, December 6, 2013 at the University of Virginia Hospital. Eleanor was born October 2, 1936 in Greene County. She was the daughter of the late David Howard Marshall and Bertha Jane Roberts Marshall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. Pace; two brothers, David Marshall and Tavner Marshall, her sister-in-law, Cornelia P. Eary and her brother-in-law, Eugene “Mutt” Taylor.

Eleanor is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Pace Arrington of Charlottesville; her son, Marshall Anthony “Tony” Pace (Norma) of Ruckersville; two sisters, Joyce Taylor of Stanardsville and Jane Haney (Harol) of Richmond; two sister-in-laws, Ann Marshall and Gwen P. Sprouse, her brother-in-laws, Richard F. Eary (Opal), Ron Pace (Nancy) and Jay Pace (Gondi); a grandson, Mark Arrington (Amy) of Ruckersville; a granddaughter, Jennifer Arrington Spratley (Meade) of Charlottesville; a great-grandson, Pace Chapman Arrington of Ruckersville; a second great-grandchild expected in April 2014 and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. She was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church and attended Mountain View Methodist Church.

She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, tending to her flowers, softball and children but above all her love was in her family. A graveside service was held at 1 pm Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Spring Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Brandon Ives and Rev. William Payne officiating.

David Woodrow Shifflett

David Woodrow Shifflett, 74, of Free Union passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born on September 7, 1939 in Charlottesville to the late Claude and Beulah Morris Shifflett.

Woodrow was a retired Virginia Department of Transportation employee and a member of the Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church in Boonesville. He was a wonderful, well liked man who will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his brothers, Claude Hamilton and his wife, Eleanor and Alvin Lee, his sisters, Beverly Carpenter and her husband, Joe and Sandra Shifflett, his nephew, Darryl Shifflett and his wife, Melanie, two great nephews, Thomas and Christopher and one great niece, Megan.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 15from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail Ruckersville.

Following the visitation a graveside service will be held at 11 am at Prize Hill Cemetery with Rev. Buster Payne officiating.

Everett Edwin Shifflett

Everett Edwin Shifflett, 89, of Stanardsville went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013. He was born May 8, 1924 in Rockingham County.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Lucullus and Susan Shifflett, his siblings George, Elmer, Pearl, Edith and Sarah, and one great-grandchild, Cameron Morris.

He is survived by his loving wife Clarris,  five daughters, Barbara Morris (Roger), Brenda Acosta (Cesar), Hazel Norris (Lewis, Jr.), Christine Eppard (special friend, Freeman), Donna Rogers (David), one son, Dwayne Shifflett (Molly), two brothers, Freddie Shifflett, Wilbert (Bill) Shifflett (Margie), one sister, Tilda Morris (Charles), 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of family and many, many friends.

Everett was retired from Montgomery County, MD as a truck driver after many years of service. He was a faithful member of Nortonsville Church of God. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be remembered as a prayer warrior and a mighty soldier of the Lord. He loved the joy of his salvation! He is shouting on the streets of gold and waiting for each of us to join him.

A special thank you is due to Dr. Bentley and Alice Calhoun and staff at Forest Lakes Health Center for their loving care. Thanks also to Pastor David and Carol Allison for their love and support. He loved you all very much.

Brett David McCartney

(August 24, 1964 – October 13, 2013)

Brett David McCartney, 49, of Stanardsville died on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at his residence. He was born on August 24, 1964 in Yorktown, IN to his father, David McCartney of Yorktown, IN and his mother, Sherry Borders of Gordonsville.

He graduated in 1982 from Yorktown High School in Yorktown, IN and was in the Navy in electronics from 1983 to 1989. He was employed at Liberty Fabrics, Gordonsville in a supervisory position for many years and was at Diversify in Gordonsville at the time of his brain injury.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his daughters, Brittani Renee McCartney and Jenny McCartney, his grandson, Gauge Brett McCartney and his sister, Angela Tuck.

Brett also leaves behind his beloved beagles, Jack and Molly. He had many friends everywhere and loved visiting with them. He especially enjoyed the Great Value in Stanardsville where he was always greeted enthusiastically by the employees. He will be sorely missed.

Orman “Tommy” Carol Thompson, Sr.

(March 14, 1946 – October 13, 2013)

Orman Carol Thompson, Sr., 67, of Ruckersville, better known as Tommy, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 13, 2013. He was born on March 14, 1946 in Albemarle County to the late Harry Nicolas Thompson and Carrie McDaniel Holsapple.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jeanie Pearl Thompson, five sons, Rodger Lee Roach and his companion, Diane of Stanardsville, Harry (Cookie) Thompson and his wife, Margaret of Ruckersville, Edwin (TomBoy) Roach and his wife, Virginia of Ruckersville, Dennis (Peewee) Roach of Ruckersville, Orman (Pedro) Thompson, Jr. and his wife, Patricia of Ruckersville, and three daughters, Barbara Robins and her husband, Bill of Ruckersville, Debra Mouberry and her husband, Thomas of Barboursville and Linda Seehase and her companion, Wayne of Stanardsville.

Additional survivors include a special niece, Leisa Hall, 21 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren four sisters, Ann Gayheart, Paula Holseapple, Tessie Bishop, Elaine Carol, one brother, Steve Holsapple, and step mother, Thelma Thompson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Thompson and Pete McDaniel, his uncle, Jessie W. Thompson and Grannie Thompson who raised him after his father’s death.

Tommy was a bridge foreman, heavy equipment operator for Central Contracting of Farmville before becoming a shipping and receiving foreman for Better Living Components and always a farmer at heart. Tommy loved family, fishing, bluegrass music and life on the farm. He was a hardworking, God fearing man. He attended Eden Christian Fellowship of Charlottesville.

The family wishes to thank the extended family, the church family and especially his kind and caring neighbors, Roy and Sally Wyant and everyone for their prayers, support and those that provided meals during this difficult time

Walter T. Duff, 67, of Hanover  died on September 21, 2013 at his home. He was born July 7, 1946 to the late William Jennings Duff and Elizabeth Atlee Kidd Duff.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert V. Duff and Charles B. Duff.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Allen Duff, two daughters, Barbara Eppard of Stanardsville and Brenda Duff of Fredericksburg, and one step son, Charles Hersey, Jr. of Ashland.

Duff, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of Powhatan, three sisters, Harriett Duff Frank of Richmond, Catherine Duff Snead and her husband, Roger of Quinque, Elizabeth Maxine Duff Henry of Orange, two sister-in-laws, Laoma Duff of Ruckersville and Kay Duff of Charlottesville, his very close friend, Edward (Eddie) Wojdylak and his wife, Faye of Ruckersville, his faithful companion, Scooter and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Reva May Davis

(April 19, 1935 – July 7, 2013)

Reva May Davis, 78, of Earlysville, died on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Charlottesville Health and Rehab. She was born on April 19, 1935 in Greene County to the late Elie and Edith Morris Collier.

Nanny, as she was known to a lot of folks, loved to care for anyone in need by cooking her famous masterpiece, her mashed potatoes, cleaning, or making a quilt for them. She was a “do’er”, taking care of whatever needed to be done, especially for her family that was so dear to her. She always had a “Nanny” hug for anyone that was strong as a bear. She also loved the outdoors from feeding the animals to growing beautiful flowers. She poured love into everything she did. She loved bluegrass gospel music and the Lord that the music uplifted. She is now with Him, her beautiful daughter and family she missed so much ~ waiting for the ones she left behind.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of the Piedmont, Charlottesville Health and Rehab and especially her nurses, Elaine, Graham and Angie for their love, compassion and devotion to her and our family during this time.

She is survived by her son, Ronald Davis and his wife, Sherri of Louisa, her sister, Connie Jones of Earlysville, her grandchildren, Jason, Jerry, Ashley, Jordan, Tyler, Brianna, Chase and Colby, her great granddaughter, Cierra, nephew, Nelson Davis, niece, Amanda Barnett, great nieces and nephews, Destiny, Christopher, Sara and Nelson, Jr. and numerous family, friends and loved ones.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Lewis Davis, her daughter, Brenda Gentry and her siblings, Donnie Collier and Shirley Davis.

The family  received friends on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Ryan Funeral Home in Ruckersville.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at Ryan Funeral Home with Brother Greg Lohr officiating.

Interment followed in Holly Memorial Gardens.

 Joyce Leake Fisher

(September 23, 1943 – July 1, 2013)

Joyce Leake Fisher, 69 of Ruckersville, died on Monday, July 1, 2013 at her residence. She was born on September 23, 1943 in Charlottesville to the late William Leake and Virginia Shifflett Eddins.

She is survived by her two children, Rebecca Fisher Harlow and her husband, Andy of Ruckersville and Robert Fisher and his wife, Crissy of Ruckersville, six grandchildren, Brandon Harlow, Trenton Fisher, Christian Harlow, Julie Fisher, Brian Harlow and Tonya Shifflett and one great grandchild, Chloe Harlow.

Additional survivors include her siblings, William “Bill” Leake and his wife, Mary, Judy Nicely and her husband, Gordon, Stanley Leake and Merdith Leake.

The family received friends on Friday, July 5, 2013 at Ryan Funeral Home, 12819 Spotswood Trail Ruckersville.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Evergreen Cemetery with Rev. Wendell Lamb officiating.

 Vincent Lee Shifflett

(May 31, 1991 – June 27, 2013)

Vincent Lee Shifflett, 22, of Charlottesville went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 27, 2013. He was born on May 31, 1991 in Charlottesville to Leroy and Kim Shifflett of Earlysville.

Vince was an outdoorsman who had a great passion for hunting, fishing and dirt bike racing with his cousin, Cody. He will be greatly missed by all and his loving smile will always be remembered.

In addition to his parents he is survived by his daughter, Adrienne Lily Shifflett, his companion and mother of his child, Sarah, two sisters, Dana Esposito and her husband, Bobby and Stacy Shifflett and her companion, JR Thacker, one nephew, Alex Esposito and his grandmothers, Charlotte Shifflett and Doris Roach.

Additional survivors include his aunts and uncles, Diane and Junior Shifflett, Junior and Jackie Shifflett, Rita Shifflett, Ferlin Roach, Tricia and Ivoe Marrs and Lisa Morris and George Shifflett, his cousins, Scottie Morris, Crissy Morris, Brittany Shifflett, Cody Marrs, Hunter Atwell, Jessie Atwell, Jamie Shifflett, Jason Shifflett and Trevor Roach and many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Linwood Shifflett and Alex Roach

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the UVA SICU for their guidance and special care during this difficult time.

The family received friends on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Nortonsville Church of God, 1505 Simmons Gap Rd Dyke.

Dona Carol Turner

(December 7, 1929 – June 22, 2013)

Dona Carol Turner, 83 years of age, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville. Formerly a near life-long resident of the Central New Jersey Shore, Dona moved to Charlottesville in October, 2010 where she resided at the Innovations Unit of RoseWood Village Assisted Living in Hollymead.

Miss Turner graduated from Asbury Park High School, Asbury Park, New Jersey and Trenton State College, also in New Jersey. Her career spanned decades of teaching Physical Education in Manasquan, Ocean Township, Freehold and Neptune school systems. In her later years she found teaching special needs students to be a very meaningful group to work with. Dona retired from Neptune Township High School in 1993. Donna served in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary; she would have celebrated her 50th anniversary in September had she lived that long. She was active in training, held various offices and most of all she enjoyed inspecting boats for safety and serving on the ships with her colleagues.

Dona was preceded in death by her parents, Grace S and Clinton D. Turner of Avon, NJ, her grandparents, Florence I. and George W. Turner of Avon, NJ, her beloved dogs, Hoss and Angel and her horse Laurie Bee.

Dona leaves her two sisters Lois G. Turner of Tinton Falls, NJ and Patricia Scott of Lakeland, FL, her precious companion kitty, Mimi, who shared her life in Virginia, her caretaker and friend, Evadne S. Deeds of Quinque, and the wonderful, caring and loving staff of the Innovations Unit at RoseWood Village Assisted Living.

Dona’s passions were teaching and empowering students, serving in the Coast Guard as listed above and ANIMALS!! She befriended them, protected them, took excellent care of them and supported Humane Societies in New Jersey and in Virginia. One of her greatest life’s joys was purchasing Laurie Bee, a registered Tennessee Walking Horse whom she delighted in providing for until Laurie’s death last year.

A private memorial service will be held in Virginia followed by a graveside service at the Glendola Cemetery, Glendola, NJ.

Dorothy Ann Rucker

(June 15, 1956 – June 7, 2013)

Dorothy Ann Rucker, 56, of Stanardsville died on Friday, June 7, 2013 at Martha Jefferson Hospital. She was born on June 15, 1956 in Charlottesville to the late Davis and Rosetta Faulkner Rucker.

She is survived by her sons, Jonathan and Josh Rucker; her siblings, Lynn, Jessie, Frankie (Loretta), Warren, and Davis Rucker and Divine Jackson; two grandchildren, Krishawena and Zacharias Barber; two god children, Kiara and Mylasia Berry and special friends, McKee Morton, John Holmes and Linda Wood.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Davis Rucker, Jr.

A graveside service was held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Rucker Family Cemetery on Toms Rd with Rev. Rickey White officiating.

Richard Edward Raines

(March 20, 1952 – May 29, 2013)

Richard E. Raines, 61, of Barboursville, passed away on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Martha Jefferson Hospital due to complications from diabetes and heart disease. He was born on March 20, 1952 in Charlottesville to the late Thurl and Marie Raines.

Richard loved to visit with people and will be missed. Many thanks to the friends and family that showed him kindness and compassion over the years.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Clatterbuck Raines, and a brother, Thurl Raines, Jr.

He is survived by two stepdaughters, Nadia and Emily of Madison, one sister, Phyllis J. Morris and her husband, Clarence of Quinque, his sister-in-law, Faye Raines of Stuarts Draft, and several nieces and nephews.

Additional survivors include a special foster sister, Louise Hensley, who was always there for him and who loved him as her brother and his special “Aunt Mary”, whom he considered his second mom.

Burial arrangements were private.

Kenneth “Wayne” Baugher

(March 31, 1944 – May 25, 2013)

Kenneth “Wayne” Baugher, 69, of Dyke took an everlasting trip on Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born on March 31, 1944, the son of the late Arthur and Pansy Baugher.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 50 years, Joyce Collier Baugher, three children, Debbie B. Swanson, Dawn B. Shifflett and Kenneth Wayne Baugher, Jr. and his wife, Tanya. His grandchildren, Shannah and Daniel, Patrick, Trey, Sara, Kaleb, McKenzie, Baileigh and Nick and two special little girls, Audrey and Sophia, his sister, Esther Rose and her husband, Ted of Deltona, FL, his brother, Arthur Lee Baugher, Jr. and his wife, Margaret of Ruckersville, his Collier Holler family and a host of family and friends too numerous to mention.

Wayne was an artist with a tractor. He had operated a backhoe and tractor since the age of 13 and later became owner and operator of Baugher Backhoe Services for many years.

The family will received friends on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at Nortonsville Church of God.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Nortonsville Church of God with Rev. David Allison officiating.

Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Catherine Jackson Deane

(June 7, 1948 – May 8, 2013)

Catherine J. Deane, 64, of Columbia, VA was called home on May 8, 2013 with her family by her side. She was born on June 7, 1948 to the late Melton and Louise Jackson.

Mrs. Deane was employed for over 30 years with the University of Virginia Medical Center Orthopedic Department. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister and will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Robert G. Deane, son, Robert G. Deane, Jr and his wife, Carolyn, grandson, Christopher G. Deane and his wife, Jessica, sister, Mary Ann Hodges and her husband, Davis, mother-in-law, Maxine Patterson, sister-in-laws, Rita Moore and Debra Hunt and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Eugene Junior Shifflett, 76, of Ruckersville died on Monday, May 6, 2013 at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was born on November 1, 1936 in Charlottesville to the late Eugene and Rosella Collier Shifflett.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Delores Shifflett, his children, Gary Shifflett and his wife, Natlie Laverne, Michael Morris, Brenda Shifflett and her husband, Randy, Roy Shifflett and his wife, Linda, Sandy Marshall, Crystal Morris, Wayne Fitzkee, Faye Mathyas, Connie Calderon, Jeff Fitzkee and Diana, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, a special grandson, R.B., Moon and two great grandchildren that he helped raise, Joshua and Cynthia.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Fitzkee and his siblings, Edna Thomas, Dewey Shifflett, Wesley Shifflett, David Shifflett, Herman Shifflett, Harmon Shifflett, Dora Rogers, Amos Shifflett, Mary Powell and Clara Shifflett.
