Greene’s 2012 Wine Festival a success

By Susan Gibbs

“It was an outstanding success,” Greene’s Director of Economic Development Tony Williams says of the county’s Seventh Annual Discover Virginia Wine Festival, held Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22 on US 33 West in Ruckersville.

“Saturday was a perfect day. The sun was out, a cool breeze was blowing, and more than 1,000 people attended. We had people waiting in line to taste at every tent,” Williams beams.

The Festival featured seven area wineries: Burnley Vineyards of Barboursville; Ducard Vineyards of Madison County; Lazy Days Winery of Amherst; Saude Creek Vineyards of New Kent County; Kilaurwen Winery of Stanardsville; Bright Meadows Farm of Nelson County; and Savoy-Lee Winery of Huddleston.

But it wasn’t just wineries that attended the festival.

There were candle and jewelry vendors, laser engraving artists, a face painter and more.

The Virginia Wine of the Month Club was there, along with Artisan Spreads.

There was food and music, train rides for the kiddies, and even treats for the pets that came along for a family day out.

“Vendors sold out of merchandise on Saturday and had to replenish their stock for Sunday, when, even with the rain, we had 300 people gathered under tents,” says Williams.

“I am extremely happy, and looking forward to next year,” he concludes.
